We’ll start with a quick stop at Kula Country Farms, an 80-year-old working farm to give you both perspective (with a massive panoramic view of Maui’s shoreline below), and access to an array of locally-favored fruits and vegetables. Choose to tour Surfing Goat Dairy, a 42-acre goat dairy on a majestic setting on Haleakala’s hillside; wander acres of lush garden paths at Kula Botanical Gardens, with more than 2,000 exotic plant varieties; explore our Paniolo (cowboy) culture in the quaint and cool town of Makawao; choose from a variety of excellent local restaurants, and wander the cool north shore surf town of Paia; and finish the day at Ho’okipa Lookout, where pro windsurfers and kiters play offshore in one of the most consistently windy shore breaks on the island, and where most days our beloved Honu (turtles) crawl high onto the sand to bask in the day’s last sunlight. It’s a full, magical day in a Maui place you likely didn’t know existed.

Whatever stops you choose, you’re sure to come away with an appreciation for a completely side of Maui — a lush, tropical oasis on the side of dormant Haleakala volcano, where life is always 10-degrees cooler and a beat slower than down the mountain at the beach. Our itinerary can include any or all (or at least most) of these stops.

Surfing Goat Dairy – Stroll through pastures, meet friendly goats (baby goats, too, if you’re lucky!), and learn how award-winning cheeses and chocolates are created in this guided tour of a functioning, 42-acre goat dairy and playground perched on the hillside of the dormant Haleakala Volcano. Sample nationally recognized cheese and incredible goat-milk chocolate truffles, among other treats. One of Maui’s most popular local attractions and great for all ages.

Kula Country Farms – For more than 80 years this legendary family-run farm has served Maui locals with an array of crops – including seasonal strawberry picking and the largest Halloween pumpkin patch in Hawaii. Sample farm-fresh fruits and veggies and take in one of the most dramatic views on the island, a sweeping panorama of the faraway Kihei and Wailea beaches below.

Kula Botanical Gardens – You’ll wander the pathways of this hidden tropical oasis and experience more than 2,000 plant varieties, including exotic tropical and subtropical plants and orchids. It’s Maui like you’ve never seen – a taste of the Jurassic-like jungle, amidst waterfalls, streams, rock formations. There’s even an aviary, and one of the largest koi ponds in the entire Hawaiian islands.

Oceans Vodka Distillery – Life is good on this manicured, grassy hilltop viewing oasis, with its forever ocean views, upcountry breezes, and home-grown libations and farm-fresh fare.

Makawao Drive-Through – We’ll cruise through Maui’s historic cowboy town, where vestiges of Maui’s historical “Paniolo” culture still thrive today. This charming town is now home to an array of charming shops and is the hub of the island’s ongoing ranching and farming concerns. A locals favorite, Makawao also hosts one of Hawaii’s largest rodeos.

Paia Town (Lunch Stop) – Nestled on Maui’s north shore, Paia Town was once a thriving community serving an active Sugar Mill and Plantation. You’ll pass by the skeletal remains of the mill, and into a sleepy two-street town that through the years transformed into a laid-back surf town and trendy shopping mecca. Explore the galleries and boutiques, and soak in the unique, laid-back Paia surf vibe. A half-dozen great restaurants await; choose from our curated recommendations or discover your own new favorite.

Ho‘okipa Beach Park – We’ll wrap up the day in style, overlooking one of the world’s premiere windsurfing and kiteboarding beaches, where professional wave-dancers carve across and over the surf and Maui’s famed north-shore surfers challenge waves that routinely span fifteen feet. You’ll experience it from a safe, cliffside vantage point – or take a 5-minute hike to the beach, and get a closer look. More often than not, we’re treated to the sight of Maui’s beloved “honu” (sea turtles) sun-bathing on the sand below.
